For the Good of the World: Cadbury VS Boll
May 12, 2008 Media
In a fit of awesomeness, Cadbury Adams’ Stride brand gum has thrown it’s support behind the Stop Uwe Boll effort. Movie City indie has the details.
On April 4, 2008, Uwe Boll remarked to legendary horror site FearNet that he’d consider acquiescing to his critics and abandoning making films in this genre if an online petition reached one million signatures. As of press time, the petition is just about 234,000 names, which is why Stride has decided to jump in.
Boll, known for making horrifically bad video game adaptations (Bloodrayne, Postal, Alone in the Dark) and for punching out his critics, takes advantage of tax breaks in his native Germany to pump out his dreck.
More Hydro Power for Buffalo?
May 12, 2008 Sci/Tech
I was cruising the Buffalo Blogodome (two blogs enter, one blog leaves) when I came across this at Buffalo Rising. There are proposals to implement underwater turbines for power generation in the Niagara River. There would still need to be numerous environmental impact studies and such done, but it’s interesting to read about.

Apple iPhone Purchase Requires a Credit Card
May 12, 2008 Gadgets
My father-in-law was in the Galleria Mall the other day, and heard that someone there was rather upset in the Apple Store. Seems the store was not willing to accept the customers fat wad of cash to purchase an iPhone. I thought, no way is that true, what store would forego the real US American money in favor of the vagaries of credit? Well, it’s true. You can’t even use gift cards, which sucks (as is pointed at in the linked article) for teens who would ask for gift cards for Christmas/Birthdays/Graduation to help pay for it. You of course have a way to pay for the service contact, but I don’t know why that would mean you can’t use cash for the actual purchase of the device.
Bad Officiating - Not Just for the NHL!
May 12, 2008 WC
I got to watch Team USA take on Finland at the World Championships in Halifax, NS, but I kind of wish I didn’t. Team USA was holding on to a 2-0 lead on the back of Robert Esche, despite getting outshot by the Finns. Ville Koistinen shot the puck at the net on a feed from Montreal’s Saku Koivu, and the red light went on. However, it was plain to see that the puck went in under the side of the net. I saw it right away, and the goal went to video review. THEY UPHELD IT. Despite multiple camera angles showing that it should not have been. Everyone knows it:
The IIHF formally acknowledged after the game that Koistinen’s shot had, indeed, entered the side of the net and should not have counted, and the video-goal judge will not be working for the rest of the tournament.
Coach Tortorella was livid, but admitted they didn’t deserve to win, giving up so many chances. It was a very rough game as well, ending with a line brawl, with multiple game misconducts. Fun to watch, but the outcome sucks. Team USA ended up losing 3-2.
