Fantasy Football Update - Picking Up The Pieces

It’s been a rough start to the season for me in two of the more serious leagues I’m in.  The Buffalo Sports Bloggers league has me dead last at 1-2.  My draft picks of guys like Ryan Grant and Matt Hasselbeck have not yet panned out, but hope remains for them.  Grant is only now getting healthy, and I think Seattle might be down to their 35th receiver.  Oh, and don’t forget Ocho Cinco and the Bungles.

I’m 7 out of 8 in my work league, with the same 1-2 record.  Marvin Harrison, Ryan Grant (again) and Steven Jackson have all underachieved.  I actually dumped Hasselbeck here (only 4 bench spots and I needed to fill that spot on the bye) and grabbed Kurt Warner.

Can I rebound?  Bet your ass I can…I feel I’ve got the bench depth to stay strong through all the bye weeks with guys like Steve Slaton and Jonathon Stewart who can fill in for me.  I will be right there at the end for my inevitable first round playoff loss.

Donte Whitner - My Favorite Bills Player

I really like Donte Whitner.  It started early, as soon as the Bills drafted him, really.  Pundits and detractors thought he was a ‘reach’, and I wanted him to prove them wrong.  He looked to me like exactly what the team needed, someone to lay waste to receivers over the middle and support the run defense.  He’s done exactly that.

ESPN has long piece up on Whitner, showing how his childhood helped shape him into the driven individual he is today.  He spent 3 months in a cast at 4 years old, after being hit by a car.  His father was also jailed for 6 years when Donte turned 12.  He’s channelled all of this into being a leader on and off the field for the Bills.

Last year, he played host to Thursday-night film sessions in the basement of his Hamburg, N.Y. home. He brings in a chef and a masseuse. The turnout’s always strong.

Not many 23-year-olds would take it upon themselves to do something like that.

There’s also his charity, Team 20, helping out people in Cleveland, Buffalo, and elsewhere.

“We’re going to make the playoffs,” Whitner reiterated. “I’m not backing down from that guarantee. I feel even stronger about it now than when I made it.

On the field, Whitner mentions that the coaches have been looking to bring more pressure with the upgraded personnel helping out.  I’m sure Chad Johnson, er, Ocho Cinco could tell AFC Quarterbacks about what happens when Donte Whitner gets a bead on you.  Very good article from Tim Graham, so read it if you haven’t already.

One Less Johnson

It is reported by 790 The Ticket in Miami that Chad Johnson has officially changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco.  This has caused the unthinkable, an actual humorous comment in the Yahoo! blogs:

Good Gawd! He cut off his johnson!

Way to stick it to the league, Chad.  I hope you don’t mind if we call you the artist formerly known as Chad Johnson.

Thoughts On Bills vs Lions

Dwayne Wright, you suck.  Two hands, on the ball, wrap it up when that other team is trying to hit you.  Ask Tiki Barber how much that helps a career.

Leodis McKelvin, the 45yd return you had was awesome.  This and the other games show you have the skills to be a lights-out kick returner in this league.  However, if you field one more punt inside the 5 yard line, I will personally go to One Bills Drive and kick you in the groin.  I don’t care if Whitner lays me out like Chad Johnson afterwards, it’ll be worth it.

Gibran Hamdan, I’m sorry you had to sit behind an O-line formed basically out of cardboard cutouts.  I like what you were able to do out there anyway.  Hope you are not too sore due to all the hits.

Steve Johnson, I like you.  Felton Huggins, too.

NFL, shame on you for charging for the fourth pre-season game.  It’s obvious that the majority of coaches aren’t going to play anybody worth watching.  Let’s get this changed.

After Rejecting Other Deals, Bengals Trade Chad Johnson to Tyler Perry

CINCINNATI — A day after declining the Washington Redskins’ offer of potentially two first-round picks for wide receiver Chad Johnson, the Cincinnati Bengals shipped the restive wideout to omnipresent comedian Tyler Perry.

“Chad will fit in well with our stereotype-laden productions filled with embarrassingly silly, shiftless blacks,” Perry said from the set of his latest movie, “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to The Church Social,” which will be released exactly a week after his current project “Tyler Perry’s Meet The Browns” leaves theatres.

“I got a vision for Chad. This next movie has a need for a goofy black mail carrier who occasionally hits the pipe. Knowing him, it won’t be hard to work in a exuberant dance number everytime he cracks a joke.”

Well played, Ape, well played, but I think the Bengals could’ve gotten more.

Bills Making Moves to Improve

The Buffalo Bills are showing they are not going to sit idle and let the usual suspects run away with the AFC this season, making several big moves and signings as free agency began.  They signed LB Kawika Mitchell away from the Champion Giants, and picked up Spenser Johnson as well for depth at DT.  Most impressively, they took a real chance and traded a 3rd and a 5th round pick to the jags for run-stuffer Marcus Stroud.  He’s coming off injury (and a suspension for violating the performance-enhancing substance abuse policy), but if he returns to form it would address a glaring need the Bills have had since the loss of Pat Williams and Sam Adams.  Add to all of this the fact that Bryant Johnson (a 6′3″ wideout) looks to be signing here, which would darn near double the average height of the Bills’ starting receiving corps, and safety Marlon McCree is on the radar which would give Buffalo great depth at safety.

What could really make or break the Bills for the next few years is this draft.  Buffalo has drafted some very good players the past few years, including Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch, Paul Posluszny and Donte Whitner. Another impact player (CB?  A good TE if one’s on the board?) could put Buffalo back on the list of teams to pay attention to.  A lot of this will depend on Trent Edwards continuing to improve, but there were enough positive signs there that Bills fans are starting to generate a cautious buzz.

It doesn’t hurt the Bills’ build up of buzz that the Sabres are not quite the team they were the past two years.
