Now that things have settled a bit, I thought I’d look at the potential line combinations for this year. Keep in mind I’m not 100% sure who can be sent to Roches…er…Portland to start the season. Anyway, what the lines will most likely look like:
Hecht - Connolly - Pominville
Vanek - Roy - Afinogenov
Paille - Gaustad [...]
The Sabres kept their scant playoff hopes alive with a rare shootout win last night against the Ottawa Senators. Jason Spezza opened the scoring unassisted, but Maxim Afinogenov matched him a minute later. Jochen Hecht got his 22nd on the power play to finish the first period with a 2-1 lead.

You almost feel bad for the Lightning, who probably thought they had this game in the bag after 2 periods. Buffalo looked downright terrible at times, with giveaways and gaffes costing them goals early. However, strong play from their current captain and the newly-reunited Roy-Vanek-Stafford line pulled it out for em’.

This was just what the Sabres’ needed to get right with the playoff race, two regulation wins, and both in resounding fashion. Buffalo got a point from taking the Hurricanes to OT, but sit 4 points out of the playoffs as of now. Hecht returned to the lineup, but Tallinder did not make the trip. Roy, Angry Eyebrows and Lydman had the Buffalo goals, and Miller was instrumental in keeping the Sabres in it at the end, [...]
Montreal is in town tonight for a 7:30pm game at HSBC Arena. The Sabres are coming off their first win of the post-Soupy era, with a huge contribution from Steve Bernier. Bernier has fallen in love with Buffalo, and after that game, the feeling is mutual. If he can keep the energy up like that [...]
After an ugly (for both teams) loss to the Rangers this weekend, the Sabres try to regroup tonight against the freefalling Flyers. Ryan Miller weathered an early barrage from the Tampa Bay Lightning, then MacArthur, Hecht and Pominville took over from there to lead Buffalo to the 4-2 win. So THAT’S what a close win feels like. I’d almost forgotten with all the losses and the shootouts and the hurting.
