Wow - Craig Rivet Named Buffalo Sabres Captain

Lindy Ruff named Craig Rivet (acquired in trade from the San Jose Sharks) the Buffalo Sabres Captain today.

Ruff said the players voted on the choice of Rivet and the coaches then endorsed it.

“It shows the players showed a lot of instant respect for him and what he’s done,” Ruff said. “Was I a little bit surprised? Yes. .‚.‚. To garner that much trust and respect from his teammates says a lot.”

It sure does.  I like the pick, hopefully the team can feed of his toughness and move forward this year.  Pominville, Numminen, Hecht and Spacek will be the alternates (switching off home/road).

Roy, Pommers Stepping It Up

As you can see from the latest Top 30 in 30 at Mirtle’s blog, Derek Roy and Jason Pominville have been top 5 forwards for the past month.  They’ve combined for 39 points in the 8 games during that stretch.  I wasn’t sure about Pominville and the captaincy, but these past couple of games have especially seemed pretty positive for him as a leader.  Here’s hoping they keep it up for the stretch run.

Another Lackluster Sabres Weekend

Two more weekend games, two more losses for the Buffalo Sabres.  Friday’s game was a 6-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens was particularly painful, with Plekanec scoring 3 power play goals.  Vanek continued his hot streak with his 27th goal of the season, and Connolly scored as well, both also on the PP.

The next game, on Sunday, was a 4-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.  Not quite so bad as several goals (on both sides) were the result of tough bounces or pucks slipping out of scrums.  Still, it’s a game that was winnable as the Wings are a bit undermanned.  Kaleta scored his second NHL goal, and new captain Jason Pominville reached the 20 goal plateau in the losing effort.

There is a big stretch coming up against other teams wrestling fo those final playoff spots (Philly, NYR, Carolina, Washington).  With the Sabres sitting three points out right now, they NEED some wins and these would be the best teams to beat in regulation.  ‘Four point games’, blah blah blah.

Toni Lydman, Sabres Captain for November

It’s official, Toni Lydman will be wearing the C for the month of November for the Buffalo Sabres.  Jochen Hecht (October’s Captain) and Brian Campbell will be the alternate captains.  I really liked what wearing the C seemed to do for Jochen, hopefully this will bring out the best in Toni also.
