That’s My Boy - Derek Roy
May 21, 2008 NHL
Sabres.com has a gallery of Roy’s best pictures from last season, including my personal favorite above (NOM NOM NOM). Since I sponsor him at hockey-reference, it’s only fitting that I point it out.Tags: B-Lo Sports, Hockey, hockey-reference, NHL, roy, sabres
Sabres and Bills Stuff
I’ve been offline for a few days thanks to my parents being in town (and having a huge birthday party for my son and my daughter’s Christening), but if you are looking for recent Buffalo sports news, Kevin and dave in rocha over at BfloBlog have been doing some excellent work. Every Team Is Awesome But Ours dispels the MSM mindset that every other team in the NHL has things going their way more than the Sabres. “Long-term Contracts” rebuts the minor but oft-repeated point about the Sabres being ‘cheap’. Finally, Who’s the Dummy Now? gives Ralph Wilson (Buffalo Bills owner) some love for speaking out against the NFL CBA back in ‘06, the one the owners just unanimously voted to opt-out of. I’ll be back soon with my look at the Stanley Cup finals and any other cool stuff I missed while throwing down a huge carnival B-Day party for my boy.

More Hydro Power for Buffalo?
May 12, 2008 Sci/Tech
I was cruising the Buffalo Blogodome (two blogs enter, one blog leaves) when I came across this at Buffalo Rising. There are proposals to implement underwater turbines for power generation in the Niagara River. There would still need to be numerous environmental impact studies and such done, but it’s interesting to read about.

Clever Marketing and Fanhood COLLIDE!
May 7, 2008 NHL
I am now the proud ’sponsor’ of Derek Roy. Sports-Reference.com recently started up a hockey site to go with their baseball, basketball and football offerings, and it’s paid for by the ability to ’sponsor’ teams, players, coaches, and so on. It looks like a good place to go to answer some of the stat-related inquiries you have (I wonder who scored the most goals at age 18? How many goals did Lemieux score from 25-28?).
Sabres Ink Gerbe
May 6, 2008 NHL
Reports have the Buffalo Sabres signing Nathan Gerbe today, presser at 4pm. Terms are not known at this point. Gerbe, who is 5′5″, starred in the Frozen Four this year for Boston College, scoring 5 goals in the two games as BC won the tournament. He was also a runner-up for the Hobey Baker, college hockey’s version of the Heisman. Booyah!

Balsillie Wanted to Buy Sabres
May 6, 2008 NHL
I hadn’t heard this one…apparently Tom Golisano turned down Crackberry dude Jim Balsillie’s bid to buy the Buffalo Sabres. According to WGR, Balsillie offered to purchase the Sabres in December of last year, but he was turned down. Golisano is not interested in selling the team to someone who would be moving it. That did not mean he would not sell, however. Can’t wait to hear more on this. Balsillie previously attempted to purchase the Pens and the Preds.
edit: There is a very carefully worded note from Larry Quinn at Sabres.com:
From time to time, we receive inquires about the possible sale of our franchise. Although it is not uncommon to receive inquires, it is the policy of our organization not to comment on them. However, we want to reiterate to all Sabres fans and our community that we have not and will not discuss the relocation of our franchise
Notice the bolded word. They have NOT ruled out selling, just relocating.

Are the Bills Doing Well?
Apr 27, 2008 NFL
I freely admit I’m not a College Football guy, haven’t been for years. I have to say, it really seems like the Bills are making some solid picks in the draft this year, addressing needs that they have, and not letting what other teams are doing dictate what they need to do. What do you think?

Three Games in Four Nights
Apr 22, 2008 NHL
With the Sabres’ season over earlier than the last two seasons, I thought I’d take a look at something that seems to happen to the Sabres more than other teams - playing 3 games in 4 nights - and see if there is any reason to fear it.
My unofficial count showed 14 instances of 3 in 4 for the Sabres (may have missed one), for a total of 42 games. They got 53 out of a possible 84 points in those games (63% of possible points). Buffalo’s record in those games? 25-14-3. The record in the other games was 14-17-9. Pretty surprising, isn’t it? Were all the 3in4’s making the team tired for the other games, then? Buffalo won all 3 games of these 3in4’s 4 times, and lost all 3 (in regulation, OT or SO) only once. They went 1-2 5 times (including an OTL in one of those) and 2-1 4 times (again, including an OTL for one of the losses). Didn’t see much correlation between home and away for these either, as some of the 3-0 series had 2 travel days (either home/away/home or away/home/away).
A bit later, I’m going to take a lot at some of the other playoff teams that squeaked into the Eastern Conference playoffs and see if they fared better or worse.

Brian Campbell
Apr 21, 2008 NHL
I’m not sure how I’d feel about this…we needed better defense (which is not what Campbell is about). BUT, that could be provided by Tallinder and Lydman playing the way they did just after the lockout. And Hank staying on the ice. I guess I’m torn. Campbell has not looked great against the Flames, they seem to have an idea of how to frustrate him.

Sabres Sign Butler
Apr 14, 2008 NHL
Buffalo signed D Chris Butler, a 2005 4th round pick out of the University of Denver, on Sunday. He had 3 goals and 14 assists this season, which was his junior year. He quarterbacked their number one power play, and blocked 110 shots. His college point totals were 20 goals, 46 assists in 115 games. Those are numbers I like.
Buffalo is also looking to sign diminutive BC forward Nathan Gerbe (5th rounder of 2005), who came up HUGE in the Frozen Four, and Tim Kennedy (a 6th round pick), who led the Spartans to the title last year. Guess who’s filling their own AHL team this year?
