This thread will be for out of character conversations.

I'm trying to find how many extracts a L1 Alchemist with an INT of 16 would know at first level. I'll probably be able to find it as I dig through the material, but thought maybe someone would know before I finished looking.

The alchemist's class description says it falls along the same rules as bonus spells for wizards-- here:

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/ability-scores#TOC-Abilities-and-Spellcasters

From what I can tell, a 16 Int score would net you an an additional 1st level extract at 1st level.

Yeah, that part I found but it doesn't (appear, anyway) to address how many I can choose to know at L1 at character creation, to choose from on a daily basis. I'll keep lookin'.

Sorry I haven't written up my background yet. I hope to have some time to do it tonight. It is pretty straightforward.

Got my sheet built, can't seem to attach it. (Probably due to bleary-eyedness) I'm getting an error of 'cannot access attachment upload path', not sure if the problem is on my side, sorry. (Likely is.)

I think the attaching things issue is on my side, I probably just need to sign in later and fix permissions from when I transferred to the new webhost.  Good to know because I use that feature a lot during the games.

You don't have to host it here, even just a PDF on Google Drive or something works.

Who the hell are you people, anyway? I know Scott R is some schlemiel or other from Hatrack or Sakeriver, positively mookish. TheTick even my insight can hazard a guess at, but how's about LotofSnow? Another participant in other forums?

Schlemiel is definitely a more fun word to say, but I just couldn't overlook the classic.

Fortunately I've mostly fallen off of my old love for the Dolphins, or else bombs might get misapplied and such;) Howdy, Lotsofsnow:) I've played in a couple of games on another forum with some folks, one of whom was Scott and perhaps Tick, I can't recall?

Tick, I was thinking of a small vignette to establish a connection with the Silvers, given Kirdo's background as a brewer. Scott did something similar but I wasn't sure if he'd asked about that beforehand, so I thought I'd check.

Scott does whatever the flip he wants to do.

(I agonized about whether or not to write up something featuring one of the NPCs mentioned. Finally just resolved that that was why Tick posted them, so i should just do it.

I also think it's interesting we are both focused somewhat on liquor for our backstories.)

Yeah, sorry about chomping on your flavor there a bit. It'll become more clear in the interaction I'll be posting tonight that for Kirdo, that focus is really more of a side gig. More application in the big world for booze than alchemical concoctions, after all. I wonder, if you were interested, whether Kirdo and Sandy knowing each other in some capacity might be interesting to explore. I also thinking this out realize I completely forgot to include a bit about 'why is this gnome partaking of this human village's dubiously-relevant ritual? Something to expand on!)

A Spirited Affair

"This would never have happened if you had come with me," Sandy says.

Jimes holds out a rather greenish looking chunk of meat that Sandy snatches out of his fingers and presses to his eye.  The halfling says, "Woodsmen are a suspicious lot."

"They're worse when they're drunk.  Well, no-- they're worse when they want to be drunk."  Sandy pulls the meat away from his face, sniffs it.  "Is this...what kind of meat this?"

Jimes pushes the meat back toward Sandy's bruised face. "Don't worry about it.  It's fine. But what possessed you to spend the night in Ostetter's camp?"

"I got lost in the woods.  Not very lost, but lost enough.  Didn't hit camp until it was almost sundown."

"All-Saints Tippenroe, I swear... what was it this time?  A faery ring?  An odd looking tree?  What were you out looking for in the Fang Wood when you should have been delivering..." Jimes realizes his voice has gotten a little loud, and quiets himself.  "...delivering our goods?"

Sandy shrugs, grins.  "This beautiful old ruin.  I found this stone marker on the path that I'd never seen before, and it pointed the way down this narrow path.  It was rough going at first-- I had to practically carry the mule through the briars-- but then I found a broken road.  And there were statues, Jimes-- eroded, sure, but statues of dragons!  I think they were dragons.  Do dragons have four eyes and tentacles?"

"Did you find anything interesting?"

Sandy squints his one good eye at Jimes.  "I just said: a ruin.  With dragon statues."

Jimes huffs.  "I mean, did you find anything valuable?  Something to make up for the fact that Ostetter will probably never buy from us again?"

"No.  Anyway, by the time I made it to the camp, it was too late to start back.  So I sacked out, and listened to the lumberjacks getting drunk."

"Trying to get drunk," Jimes says ruefully.

"Right.  Well.  I blame Ned's new wife— she keeps putting flower water in his still.  I think we need to find a new supplier."

"Hmm," Jimes says.  "Might be a good idea anyway.  Arnama has been casting eyes at me.  I'm sure she suspects us of collaborating with Bison.  As it just so happens, there's a new fellow here for the Everflame ceremony.  Little fellow."

Sandy snorts.  Winces.

Jimes continues as if never interrupted.  "He's an alchemist, name of...Keermo.  No— Kirdo.  That's it— a gnome.  Sold some kegs to the Seven Silver— pretty staunch stuff.  He's got to have a still or something somewhere to make it.  Maybe that's our next move, eh, All-Saints?"

Sandy forgets the slimy hunk of meat pressed to his face.  Forgets the aches and bruises and embarassment of being chased half naked through a night and half a day through the Fang Wood. "An alchemist?  Really?  Here, in Kassen?"

"Boy, why is it when I say, "possibility-of-making-money", you only hear 'alchemist'?"

"I know what's important is all."

Jimes reaches up and flicks Sandy's ear.  "That's for having your priorities askew."

Sandy massages his ear.  "All right.  Where do we find him?"

"We?  You.  I've got to work."

"Your diligence at waiting tables is cutting into our bottom line.  What about money making?"

Jimes says, "I keep having to spend my wages on bandages, poultices, and barghast meat."

"This...this had better not be barghast meat."

Jimes just laughs, and says, "Find Kirdo.  And keep that meat on your face."

**

It took a day, but Sandy finally catches up to the gnome.  He watches the fellow for a bit— he'd never seen hair quite so red.  Or anyone with quite so many glass bottles around their belt.  Glass was a precious thing out here in Nirmathas— Sandy knew ol' Holgast would pay nicely for a good, glass flask.

So if the spirits didn't work out, maybe he could angle to sell the gnome's glassware...

"Lo, Master Alchemist," Sandy says, feeling a bit foolish.  "I'm All-Saints Tippenroe.  I...um...I heard you're joining in the Everflame ceremony.  Uh...so am I!  Quite...quite a coincidence.  You going.  Me going."

He takes a breath, smiles, tries not to wince.  His face still hurt a bit.  "I hear you sold some kegs to the Seven Silvers.  I'm curious if you have ever...distilled...anything more interesting than ale..."

One thing Kirdo had learned in his time on the open road: for all that they were so often almost alike, their similarities concealed a breadth of differences. Humans, that is. Kirdo glanced up at the...youngster?...yes, youngster, he decided after some scrutiny, trying to determine what was behind this interruption. Not that the lad could have known he was interrupting, Kirdo making his quiet way back to his chosen campsite with his pony, Hauler. Someday, Kirdo would be the sort of alchemist and eventually wizard who could secure his belongings even when he wasn't around, but that day hadn't come yet. In any event, keeping a room was both expensive and undesirable should-in the unlikely event!-one of his experiments go wrong.

"Don't I know you? You've done work for some of the merchants a bit all over the place. I'm sure I've seen you before," he squinted. To a gnomish sensibility, human faces could be difficult to recall if they were strangers. "Ah! Sandy, isn't it?" he said, recalling the nickname and unaware if using it might be presumptuous. Just the sort of fellow Kirdo would like to know, someone connected to trade in these parts. And apparently a soon to be traveling companion, as well. He offered his small hand to shake, marked with curious burns not just of flame.

When All-Saints mentioned brewing, however, Kirdo's glance sharpened. Competition, perhaps? No, it didn't quite feel right for that. "Well there's interesting and then there's interesting, Mr. Tippenroe," Kirdo replied and appeared suddenly much more invested in the chat with this young human. With a start, he jerked his hand back and then offered it again, as though resetting himself. "Ah! Right. Sorry. Kirdo Dunritty, at your service, Mr. Tippenroe," he said, remembering his niceties.

(OOC: A couple of questions: I'm not clear just what if any laws might regulate alcohol or its production around here. Don't know if that's something Tick wants to decide, or if we simply feel out as we go. The second question: I've read over alchemists on the website, and I'm not sure if the 'needs no prerequites' in brew potion applies to the gold price or not.)

A helpful recap so you know what's going on:

*  Every year, someone takes a lamp to Kassen's tomb to light it from the eternal flame there, a symbolic gesture to keep the town safe throughout the winter.
*  When there are enough young people coming of age, they are sent to retrieve the flame as a group.  Several townsfolk (including the wizard, Holgast) left days ago to "prepare" the way and the crypt.  This is known to you as simple traps and illusions.
*  The children in the town like to tell stories of previous parties dying horrible deaths but your mentors assure you that no one has been seriously hurt in decades.
*  The In Character thread will be up shortly.  The four of you will be heading to the town square just before noon on the 4th of Neth, the day that Kassen and his men left to find the mercenary Asar's camp, to stop his former friend's attacks on the town.  You can talk to one another for a bit before the ceremony begins.

Another housekeeping tip - the forum has a dice roller, accessed via the button that looks like a d6 above.  This page will tell you some of the things you can do with the rolls (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2032) (the most handy being the ability to label your rolls with {Names} so you can keep track of them).  Example:

Initiative 1d20+4 : 1 + 4, total 5
Attack Roll 1d20+2 : 3 + 2, total 5
Damage 1d6+3 : 2 + 3, total 5
Title: Re: Crypt of the Everflame - OOC
Post by: TheTick on January 22, 2018, 08:34:07 AM
Also, you can put multiple rolls within one set of the Roll tags, like I did above. That looks like this:
[blockquote]Initiative 1d20+4 : 15 + 4, total 19
Attack Roll 1d20+2 : 2 + 2, total 4
Damage 1d6+3 : 1 + 3, total 4[/blockquote]

Initiative 1d20+4 : 8 + 4, total 12
Attack Roll 1d20+2 : 13 + 2, total 15
Damage 1d6+3 : 6 + 3, total 9

That can make it easy to keep things neat, especially once you have multiple attacks:
Attack Roll - Main Hand 1d20+4 : 16 + 4, total 20
Damage 1d6+3 : 2 + 3, total 5

Attack Roll - Off Hand 1d20+2 : 18 + 2, total 20
Damage 1d6+3 : 6 + 3, total 9

Okay, so the code block didn't show you what I typed but hopefully you get the idea.  Also, the forum will tell me if you edit your post once the dice have rolled, so if you typo a roll, just do it again in a new post.

I wonder how the roll dice function works with the post preview function...

Rolled 1d20+3 : 17 + 3, total 20

:tests:

Well, it works, but if you edit a post and click preview again, it rolls it again.  I was hoping it would retain the previous results so you could write up an attempted action, preview the post with a roll, then write up the success/failure as revealed in the preview.

"That's right," Sandy says.  "I'm an...agent, I suppose.  I find suppliers around Nirmathas that sell things that people in Kessen might want, and connect them to the merchants here.  I also work with Father Prasst as an apprentice illuminator."

"Well there's interesting and then there's interesting, Mr. Tippenroe..."

Sandy gets right to the point, but keeps his voice down.  "'Interesting' as in distilled spirits.  My...um...partner and I have worked out an arrangement with some of the logging camps wherein we supply them with whiskey, and they supply us with gold.  Currently, we've only got two camps, but there's a potential for many, many more..."

He lays out the details, including the volume and frequency of their usual deliveries, but withholds the problems with their current supplier.

Yes, there are definitely limitations - if you want to write up a dramatic telling of your actions, you could always roll it here then write it up once I let you know if it's successful or not.  Otherwise, be creative in the attempt  (Sandy confidently aims the crossbow at the charging pirate, exhales, and fires) and I'll be creative in the result (The bolt finds a weak spot in the pirate's cheap leathers and pierces his chest.  He stumbles and falls to his knees, coughing blood, before collapsing).

'Ah,' Kirdo thought to himself with a little disappointment. For a moment he'd thought-but no, working on really interesting alchemical creations was...unwise...with a new and untested partner, and besides, that sort of thing took coin, and though the gnome was on his way to a steady and reliable income, it hadn't come easily. He was very distractable by his own work, which ended up days or weeks later with no funds to speak of. Something reliable would be...well, reliable, and brewing came easily to him. It's a little odd that Mr. Tippenroe seems determined to almost whisper, and peculiar as well that this particular market hadn't been snapped up already. Kirdo knew humans well enough to know that lumberjacks wouldn't go long without something to warm their bellies and dull their aches in the forest.

"Well I can certainly manage that," he acknowledged after hearing Tippenroe's terms. "And I've got some wares that might serve to whet further appetites right now, as a matter of fact. Will I be dealing with you, or should we speak with your partner as well?" he asked, unwilling to go much further without some certainty that any agreement they made would be valid.

"I'm happy to introduce you," Sandy says, "and he will want samples anyway. Why don't we meet at Deegle's Fountain tonight?"

do you want to hand wave the rest? From my POV, i think Sandy would be thrilled to be acquainted with Kirdo. He's also happy to be able to supply a good product to customers who he previously disappointed. And happy to be making some coin.

It goes both ways, though-Kirdo has a working interest in things like illumination-a good illustration being very important sometimes in alchemy. And he would share all kinds of information, though he would be a bit cagier on the stuff other people can drink safely.

I'd started to build out Sandy to be a two-weapon rogue, but with Dariel being a two-weapon ranger, and Maura being a frontline healer, I'm wondering if I should change his stats to be more of an archer-rogue.

Thoughts?

Kirdo could use a secondary meat shield, and an archer standing in the back with him might suffice;)

As far as your knowledge of the crypt, you know of it, but it is far enough away (about a day and a half) that you wouldn't have any first-hand knowledge.  Also, the townsfolk that HAVE been there would be cagey about giving details, to preserve the "surprises" that have been set up for you.

My roll definitely plays into that. With a critical failure, Kirdo is almost certain Kassen is a town that exists.

(I used an online character builder-- pathguy-- to make my character, and there was no mention of them)

Info is here: https://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/

When you create your character for a campaign, ask your GM how many traits you can select. In most cases, a new PC should gain two traits, effectively gaining what amounts to a bonus feat at character creation. Some GMs may wish to adjust this number somewhat, depending upon their style of play; you may only be able to pick one trait, or your GM might allow three or more. Even if your GM normally doesn't allow bonus traits, you might still be able to pick up some with the Additional Traits feat.

My bad for not clearing with TheTick if we were to pick the standard two.

Kirdo could use a secondary meat shield, and an archer standing in the back with him might suffice;)

After looking over what it'd take to make a rogue archer useful, I think I'm going to stick with making Sandy versatile.

Yes, you can have two traits.  Should've mentioned that - I need to start using the Big 16 questions to start these things.

Without asking you to tell me if Kirdo believes in this stuff, Tick, a roll to see how much an outsider knows of this man from nearly 200 years ago, whether it's all verbal tradition or myth, or if it might actually have happened as the story says.

A 1, a 10, statistically my next roll has to be a crit, right? To clarify, the reason I'm asking is that it's partially relevant to how much respect Kirdo has for this ritual past 'gin up a good name to sell more gin'
Title: Re: Crypt of the Everflame - OOC

An outsider wouldn't know specifics, but you would be reasonably certain that it all happened more or less the way events are described.  With some leeway for heroic exaggeration, of course.  Keep in mind with a fantasy setting, the longer-lived races may be getting first-hand accounts from their parents who were there at the time (while mostly human, the town does have at least one Dwarf, some Halflings and Gnomes, and an Elf/Half-Elf or two).

(This is probably a much deeper dive than us needed, but I'm having rolling, and further it ties into 'make a good impression' that Kirdo is going for. A social blunder by the odd gnome would hinder that, hence the roll.

I think since it was just aid another, Kirdo is confident he could chip in with getting their bearings and such, but it wasn't a crit on an actual survival check and with Dariel there he's fine with more experienced heads charting the course. If anyone is concerned with their carry capacity and such, Hauler is good to go.

There's honestly not a scale on it, but it's about 40 miles to the crypt.  I'll reveal more map as you get to it.

I'm mostly hand-waving the travel time, unless someone actually fails one of the survival checks to follow the trail/map.

Assuming I'm posting the next bit soon, barring someone needing something else.

Normally I'd do a map, but let's wing it theater of the mind style for this, as it's pretty basic.  The Orcs are about 60ft in front of you, with a fairly large tree trunk behind them across the road.  The ground is fairly open for about 10ft beyond the road itself, so 30ft or so total, which then gives way to dense forest/underbrush (consider it difficult terrain, movement costs doubled).

Rakeesh, they are speaking the common tongue, but you'd get the gist of the vulgarities just from the tone and rude gestures. ;)

In my experience it is usually best to just wait until the people ahead of you post their turns due to how things can change throughout the round. Sucks to have to wait, but that's the nature of the beast (i.e. play by post).

Edit: All though 2 crits in a row is always fun.

Dariel is first up, however, Diplomacy is by rule "generally ineffective" against creatures who mean you harm in the immediate future, in combat.  It's fine if you still want to give it a try, especially if it fits your character's personality.

Initiative order:
Dariel 22
Orc 1  17
Orc 2  13
Orc 3  10
Maura 9
Sandy 8
Kirdo  4

Kirdo and Sandy both saw that the axe should've cleaved Dariel's head from his shoulders, but didn't. (Made the Will saves to disbelieve)

Maura, for her part, thinks Dariel's reaction was odd but would still act as if the Orcs are real.  (Just missed the Will save, even with the bonus from seeing Dariel nearly killed)

Nighthawk, Dariel cannot currently tell where the illusion is coming from.

Will work up the other two Orcs in a bit, then Maura is up.

If we are in initiative, then if Sandy goes before Kirdo and Dariel, he'll use both his actions to wake them up.

Title: Re: Crypt of the Everflame - OOC

Maura 24
Wolf 21
Sandy 20
Kirdo 7
Dariel 6

Hollerin' would definitely wake everyone, and notify the wolf you are aware of it.

As far as any of you can tell, the wolf was real.  You can see where it was and the direction it ran in the woods, but to track it further you'd need to go after it and try and track it.  If no one chooses to do that, we'll be out of initiative order and I just need to know if you are doing anything different (different watches, etc.).

2) Given that I stated I wasn't awake... when will I be? I'm a light sleeper, honest! ;)

Unfortunately, Kirdo's bombs do fire and splash damage. He's not thinking his most clearly at the moment, and in any event enjoys throwing bombs. So if the conditions were right and he threw one, I hope it's not too dry! He's also forgotten about the possibility of illusions.

I believe AoOs happen only if you stood up and tried to move out of the spaces adjacent to the wolves, right? We're done with the surprise round and back at the top of the order, right Tick?
Title: Re: Crypt of the Everflame - OOC
Post by: Lotofsnow on February 25, 2018, 10:27:32 AM
I'm confused to what round we are in. I thought Sandy still had to go in the surprise round, but I see Kirdo already went even though he's last in initiative. Was that in the surprise round as well? I guess I'm not sure on the status of things or what wolves have been hit and whatnot.
Title: Re: Crypt of the Everflame - OOC
Post by: Rakeesh on February 25, 2018, 10:50:59 AM
My interpretation is that what was described was the surprise round-that Kirdo didn't take his turn, so much as simply start to wake up and get missed by a wolf (presumably because the wolf rolled really badly). Sandy took a shot at one of the wolves, his own surprise action. I could be mistaken, of course.
Title: Re: Crypt of the Everflame - OOC

I'm a bit out of it right now... Heck, I posted this in the wrong thread. :P

I forgot how to resolve my secondary attack. I have Two-Weapon Fighting, so I don't know if it's a straight up roll of it there's penalties to it, so I'm going to roll it as-is and you can adjust the roll as needed.

ETA: I'm assuming these aren't vermin... right? :D

ETA #2: Natural 1 on off-hand attack, so it doesn't matter. But I'd like to know for future.

And your dice roller can die in a fire; it's given me more natural 1 d20 rolls than any game I've ever played.  :-[

Just the wolves and Sandy went in the surprise round, and I need to add the sneak attack die to his shot.  We'll be in the normal initiative order after that.

Standing up from prone does provoke an AoO, move action.

Maura's up next.

BTW, two-weapon fighting works very similar to 3.5E - if you have the feat, and your off-hand weapon is light, -2 to both attacks.
Title: Re: Crypt of the Everflame - OOC
Post by: Lotofsnow on February 26, 2018, 10:46:08 PM
Maura wasn't prone. She was standing with her back to the fire based on her last position. She had no intention of falling asleep until after her watch.

Granted, if you just want to move the wolf's attack to the one it gets on its action, that's fine. But there was no opportunity attack triggered there.

I can understand why getting up from prone is a move action (but I think it should not draw AOOs).  I am having a hard time reconciling the idea that moving 30 feet is an equivalent effort to drawing a dagger.

Advancing things today, once I get all this damn snow moved.

Once your base attack bonus is +1 or higher, you can draw a weapon as part of another move action.  Sucks for level 1 rogues though.

Is the wolf threatening Maura near enough to Sandy that he could reach it with a 5-ft step?  Would he be able with that move to position himself into a flank with her?

Does making a 5 ft step draw AOOs?

The last two wolves are about 10ft apart.  Maura's now-dead wolf would be about 10ft from Sandy's (given that Sandy took a 5ft step over there to Maura's) if that helps.  I imagined Dariel's move was to the wolf left by Sandy's move, perhaps to discourage it from chasing after the injured teammate.

Title: Re: Crypt of the Everflame - OOC

You get 1HP/level per full night of rest (and there's enough time left tonight for that to occur).  Someone with the Heal skill can double that if they are able to tend to you (DC 15 check, good for up to 6 people other than themselves).

So, you guys have to get down the hill.  At the end of the day, three Acrobatics checks will need to be rolled for each of you to make it to the bottom, BUT I'm all good with any in-character ideas for making it easier.

Here is where I fall to my death.  ::)

If you die an ignominious death, perhaps your teammates can come up with a suitable lie to tell the townsfolk.  "He definitely got thrown into a mountain by a demon, and did NOT slide down a muddy hill and hit his head on a tree stump."

Sorry guys! I hadn't gotten any notifications and forgot to check back! Posting now.

NATURAL 20!

Sandy forgoes the rope and somersaults down the hill.

Even the Russians give him a 10.0.

I was going to tie a rope around you, but looks like you won't need it.

(pssst, I need 3 of the rolls to make it all the way down, you may have just jinxed yourself)

Crap. I've been dealing with some personal problems... I'll try to catch up on this soon.

ETA: And, as could be expected, I descended the hilly terrain with the subtlety of a lawn dart.

The rope should help.

Did you tie Maura's rope to yourself like she offered? That's in addition to using the rope to climb down.

Nighthawk, no worries, it's not like *I've* been consistently here (though you are going through a heck of a lot more than me!).  When you can, roll that check 2 more times.  And I'm assuming everyone was using whatever ropes were offered, simply because you seem like a sensible group.  So far.

I didn't even see that it was offered, so although I would likely say "no" because I wasn't explicit, I'll leave it to DM's discretion.

Anyone hear from Rakeesh?

Odd. Didn't tamper with any rolls. Just changed the post to say she shakes her head at her companions.

Yeah, it does that.  Reaching out to Rakeesh through other means.

Also, I'm around somewhat sporadically while I deal with real life crap.

So I was in the hospital for a few days, then jumped straight into "vacation" with limited internet.  Still want to get things moving again.

Yeah, fine.  I was sitting at work, when the worst pain I've ever felt hit my chest/sides along with nausea.  Got the heart checked out, wasn't that, honestly I don't think they know exactly what it was.  My feeling is some sort of weird muscle spasm or something?  Anyway, the fact that it was my chest meant I got a wonderful overnight stay at Kenmore Mercy (nice people, very attentive nurses, terrible food).

I've been thinking about it.  As long as life doesn't throw another curveball or three...

So I'm going to try and start things up again, probably right after the muddy hill (because that's not a very exciting starting-back-up point!).  Let me reach out and see if anyone else wants to try again.

So I've 2 that want to get back at it, if neither of the others respond, I'll recruit some new members.

I don't have a problem with my character... I have a problem with him rolling dice badly and being the worst ranger EVER. :P

So still no Rakeesh, what I might do is just NPC his character so we can move, and if he pops back up, great, if not, I have a spot to add someone back in.

The doors will require a Strength check to open, once everyone outside is done investigating.

Considering this an official break for the holidays, so no pressure to post anything until after New Year's.

Especially no drunk posts ON New Year's.
