Search Result Fun
Oct 24, 2008 Boring site stuff, NFL, NHL
Like many bloggers, I obsess over my blog stats…who’s reading, where they are from, how they found me, and so on. In doing that, I’ve found some interesting things out:
- The Buffalo area is still quite curious about Nolan Pratt…58 people found there way to my site in the past month searching for him. He’s playing in that KHL you’ve been hearing about, in case you were wondering.
- zeed freems was up there, too. Huh?
There are other things that aren’t big drivers of traffic but nevertheless make you go hmmm:
- “dirtiest hockey” I know why that’s there (I did link to a vid of dirtiest hockey plays) but it still makes me laugh.
- belt fed nerf and similar searches - I still need that for the office.
- mule windows irata - I need to get back to Old Game posts.
- my hot wifes pictures - sorry, she’s mine, perv.
- nifty keen - heh. I do, in fact, sometimes talk (and write) like that.
- saku koivu wife - What is it that makes women (I assume) search all day for hockey players’ marital status?
- yo-mama-ween - I still love that commercial.
Well, there you go. A bit of insight into how people find this site. Of course, I am above the practice of Brady Quinn traffic posts just to inflate my stats. Oops. Well, at least I won’t post the pictures. You are welcome.

WordPress 2.6
Jul 15, 2008 Boring site stuff
Just an FYI guys, the bloggy portion of things was upgraded to WordPress 2.6. I like some of the new features, like post edit tracking, a Press This! bookmarklet to let you easily blog about whatever you are viewing, theme previews (nice since I change themes a LOT), image captions, word count…you can see the others here. SWEET. I just want to add another line or two of text in order to test post versioning and the wrap.
Wordle
Jun 23, 2008 Boring site stuff, Media
Wordle is a site that’s making the blog-rounds. The site has a Java applet where you can put in a bunch of text (or your del.icio.us tags) and makes tag clouds out of them, with multiple font/color options. I made on of the headers on my site with it, and there are some really interesting ones on their site (you can save them to a gallery there). Here’s Barack Obama’s ‘Race Speech’ as interpreted by Wordle, for instance. Saw it at Lifehacker but it’s all over the place.

Adjudicating the Blogroll
May 23, 2008 Boring site stuff
Inspired by Kevin’s blogroll editing, I’ve taken a look at my blogroll and tweaked it. For me, since there were so few links, it really involves adding and not subtracting. Any of the sites I have gone back to after the first visit are in. If it’s something I’ve linked to, it’s pretty much in (unless I forgot it). Most places I’ve seen inbound links from are in. If anyone else wants in, drop me a comment here and I’ll take a look. If you’ve linked me and I haven’t noticed, let me know as I’m more than happy to return the favor.
Spreadshirt Discount
Apr 9, 2008 Boring site stuff
You can use the code Spreadshirt227 to get five bucks off your Spreadshirt order (using the little swag link at the top). That goes for any Spreadshirt store, so go to town on there, get your The Kaleta! shirts from 289’s store also.

Wordpress 2.5 Installed
Mar 29, 2008 Boring site stuff
I went ahead and installed WordPress 2.5, let me know if there are any issues that crop up. Looks like most of my plugins work, with the notable exception of WP-United. So, no forum/WP integration, but that really just affects me. Anyway, enjoy!

24 ways - Performance On A Shoe String
Dec 27, 2007 Boring site stuff, Software
Drew McLellan has posted a very good run down of how to improve blog (and general website) performance. It covers caching, outsourcing of feeds, and using something like Amazon’s S3 to host large files, just as an example.
Heck, there are (amazingly enough) 24 different articles on the 24ways site that deal with all sorts of web design quirks. Very good stuff there, check it out.
