Comic Book Review – Paper Girls Vol. 1

Creative Team:

  • Writer: Brian K. Vaughn
  • Art: Cliff Chiang
  • Colors: Matt Wilson
  • Letters: Jared K. Fletcher

When Brian K. Vaughn is writing a new series, you can take it to the bank that it’s going to be good.  So it’s no surprise that his latest series from Image, Paper Girls, is indeed great.  If you took the 80s kid adventure movies such as ET or The Goonies or Stand by Me and shook things up by having four twelve year old female protagonists, you’d end up with Paper Girls.  BKV is joined by Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson on art duties, so the books look great.  Chiang hits the sweet spot for me with detail, and Wilson’s bright pastel color scheme goes perfectly with the early morning setting.

I’m not sure how much I can say about the story without spoiling it, but if you know Vaughn from Runaways then you know he can write young people.  Basically you have four paper girls, the first paper girls in their town as they work in the early morning the day after Halloween.  They uncover something unbelievable and find themselves on the run while they try to figure out just what the heck is going on.

Look, I can’t say more without ruining the suspense, seriously if anything of what I listed above piques your interest, grab a copy of the first trade I linked above.
