Day Two: Bye-Bye Orpik

Orpik the elder has signed back with the Penguins for the surprisingly reasonable price of $3.75 million a year for 6 years. Sabres GM Darcy Regier spoke about the situation today:

€śWe are looking both short-term needs and we€™re looking long-term because we€™ve got a number of players that we want to sign and we want to keep here,€ť he said. €śPlayers that are big contributors now to our hockey club and there are also players down the road… It€™s a combination of the short-term picture, the immediate needs and then the long-term. We want to make sure we address both sides of that.

€śI remain hopeful.€ť

This may not be right, but I read that as “We like the potential of the guys in our system more than we like Brooks Orpik for 5+ years.”

By the way, the most disturbing thing from that article is the fact that Sekera goes by ‘Reggie’. WTF?

  • Wow, you’re really hung up on that “Reggie” thing, huh? :-D I like it. I think it’s far better than “Sekera-zy” or whatever other stupid name they could’ve come up with. So it’s nonsensical! Even better!

Sounds like your interpretation of Darcy’s comments are pretty spot-on though. I think there’s also a little bit of a home-town discount going on with Orpik’s deal. I’m not convinced he’d take that same deal from anyone else.

  • On second though though, it is pretty funny that Darcy referred to him as Reggie. I can’t recall him ever calling anyone else by a nickname.
