Arena League 2 Team to Buffalo?

There was a short note at WGR550.com about this…the report is Buffalo will be getting an AF2 team.  No other details at this point, but for a city that already lost a real Arena League team to Columbus, and might just lose their NFL team to wherever, this can’t feel good.  At least AF2 doesn’t have Bon Jovi and John Elway hanging around all the time.

NHL Taking Another Look at Goalie Equipment

Ryan, it’s a good thing you’re on the competition committee, I guess.  Commish Gary Bettman stated that the league will take a “good look“ at the equipment that goaltenders wear/use in the NHL.  The league last adjusted the equipment for the 05/06 season, reducing the pad sizes amongst other changes.  Miller blames the smaller pads for the thumb injury he had that season.  There is also contention about the knee pads (cutting you off at the pass with the PG-13 jokes now, thanks) which protects the knees of goalies that use a butterfly style, which is basically all of ‘em nowadays.

SCF: It Started So Well…

…then the Red Wings woke up and totally outclassed the Pittsburgh Penguins, winning 4-0 in game one of the Stanley Cup Finals.  The Pens carried the play in the first period, with the help of a Detroit goal getting called back by yet another Goaltender Interference penalty on Holmstrom (that’s a rule they might just take a look at in the off-season, considering the impact it’s had in these playoffs).  It looked like Pittsburgh would be able to stand toe-to-toe with Detroit.

It all came apart in the final 40 minutes, however.  No matter what they threw at Osgood, he stopped it.  Not that there was much in those final two periods, as the Wings were constantly winning faceoffs, stealing the puck and generally harrassing the Penguins players.  Mikael Samuelsson scored two unassisted goals, Dan Cleary netted a shorty and Zetterberg finished things with a power play goal.  Game two is Monday in Detroit, and Pittsburgh must regroup and bring some better play back to the Joe.
