Sekera Staves Off Elimination

For at least one more day.  Buffalo got the win in OT, but the loser point for Boston takes some of the margin for error that the Sabres have.  They HAVE to win all their games, and hope that the teams ahead of them start losing in regulation.  For the full playoff scenario, go here.

I was a little disappointed, I didn’t get to see the whole game, but I was really expecting something that more resembled the Calgary/Vancouver game of last night.  Those teams were so amped up that there was rough stuff after every whistle it seemed like (and the litany of roughing penalties and 10 minute misconducts bears that out).  I wish I hadn’t felt so sick and could’ve stayed up to see that whole game.

Boll VS Tootoo!

A nice long fight, and a good test to ensure the video posting plugin still works. :)

Wordpress 2.5 Installed

I went ahead and installed WordPress 2.5, let me know if there are any issues that crop up.  Looks like most of my plugins work, with the notable exception of WP-United.  So, no forum/WP integration, but that really just affects me.  Anyway, enjoy!

Miller Joins Competition Committee

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller has joined the NHL Competition Committee, which meets in Toronto during the Summer.  The opportunity arose after discussions between Eric Lindros (NHLPA Ombudsman) and Sabres management.

I analyze a lot and feel like I’m the kind of person who can analyze the situation and talk openly about stuff. So it’d be fun to just have an opinion or give back to the game. It’s not really focusing on goalie equipment. There’s a lot of issues in the league right now that are going to come up. I told the NHLPA I’d commit to do it, and we’ll see how it comes through.

Miller is not the bulkiest goalie in the league and also does not try and pack on the largest equipment, prompting him to joke:

I think maybe they picked me because if you look at my gear, I’m really not trying to cheat

I almost wish he would, might help keep out some othe recent soft goals.

Gameday - Canadiens at Sabres

Buffalo has a chance to gain some ground tonight, as the Montreal Canadiens visit HSBC Arena at 7:30pm.  The Sabres ‘improved’ to 3-9 in the shootout with the victory over the Senators last night to keep pace with Boston and Washington.  Both are idle tonight, although Philly is playing New Jersey.

One concern I have is that this is (again) the 3rd game in 4 nights, and you know Miller is not going to sit it out with the playoffs on the line.  I hope he can just survive the rest of the season and we bring in some help for next year.  No other injury news yet, so I’m figuring on the same lineup as last night.

Iron Giant To Run In London Marathon

Lloyd Scott has constructed a 9 foot tall Iron Giant costume and will run inside it during the London Marathon.  He is raising money for the Autism Trust.

I am raising funds for a fantastic charity called the Autism Trust.  The reason I chose a robot is that people often think autistic people have a robotic existence, when in fact they are very real people inside with huge potential and the ability to flourish with the right help and support.

Scott has run the marathon in costumes before, including as Indiana Jones with a boulder ‘chasing’ him.  Cool build and a great cause.  Spotted at Mr. Future via woot!

Barely Breathin’

The Sabres kept their scant playoff hopes alive with a rare shootout win last night against the Ottawa Senators.  Jason Spezza opened the scoring unassisted, but Maxim Afinogenov matched him a minute later.  Jochen Hecht got his 22nd on the power play to finish the first period with a 2-1 lead.I Punch you

Buffalo then assisted Mike Fisher in breaking out of a goal-scoring slump, as he scored the next two.  However, the Goose scored the game-tying goal with less than 2 minutes to play to force the OT session.  After no score there, the game went to the shootout.  Like many of you, I wrote the Sabres off once they got there, but they came through and notched the win.  Pominville and Roy put shots past Gerber, and Spezza had the only tally for the Sens.

I was pleasantly surprised by the play of Max, it seemed like he was skating very well and was ofthen the most dangerous player on the ice.  Still a few times where I wanted him to pass instead of making yet another loop around with the puck but I can live with it when he’s getting the shots he was getting.

Unfortunately, there was no help in the standings last night as Washington and Boston both won.  Philly was idle and remain 5 points ahead with the Bruins.

Montreal comes in to town tonight for another must-win game.

Lifehacker Photo Roundup

We just got a new (inexpensive) digital camera, the Kodak EasyShare C613. Er, except ours is pink.  Hey, it was the only one in stock and we wanted it before we went to the hospital.  :P  As I was already searching Lifehacker for half-remembered photo editing/managing links I thought I would share them with you. You are welcome.

Namexif - allows you to rename all of your photos based on the date they were taken.  Handy if you have a bunch of pictures off varying digital cameras with the ever-so-helpful names IMG00145.jpg and so on.  Picasa can do this as well, if you highlight multiple photos and press F2, but this is great for non-Picasa users.  May have mentioned this before.

What’s Its Color? - you can upload or link to a photo, and it will tell you what colors are complementary as well as the most common visually unique colors.  Great if you are trying to figure out a color scheme based on a logo or picture.

Photoshop Express - like Picnik before it, a basic web-based photo editor.  I might still like Picnik better but both are very handy if you are at a friend’s house or otherwise away from your software and need to do some basic retouching.

Gameday - Sabres at Senators

Buffalo travels to Ottawa tonight for the back end of a home-and-home series with the Sens.  Derek Roy  is expected to play after hurting his leg in the horrific loss on Tuesday.  It’s just about to the point where the Sabres need to win out to have any shot at the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference, which is a tall order for this uneven squad.

In other news, the Sabres signed F Derek Whitmore and D Mike Kostka, who were both free agents after finishing out their college careers.

The team will also be hosting an ‘Away Game Party’ for the Maple Leafs game on April 1.  If you are collecting the Sabres pins from the Buffalo News, you can complete your collection there.  Yay.

update:  Redden is still on the shelf.  Gerber is in goal.

Epic Collapse

The Sabres coughed up a 3-1 lead in the third period in massive fashion, allowing 5 goals in less than 10 minutes.  Reactions to the loss range from short and angry to sad and dramatic (I love the switch to black).  Despite the math that says they can still make it, I’m sure not expecting it anymore.

When’s the NFL Draft?
