Sabres drill Thrashers 6-0

Now that is what Sabres hockey looks like.  The Buffalo Sabres opened a four game homestand with a domination of the Atlanta Thrashers, winning 6-0.  Ryan Miller had a few tough stops but mostly cruised to his first win (and first shutout!) of the season.  The power play came to life with 3 straight goals and 4 overall on 7 tries, and the PK put one in to boot.  In particular, the second PP unit with Connolly, Kotalik, Gaustad, Campbell and Spacek looked unstoppable with Timmy on the halfwall.  Goose was an immovable object in front of the net and Lehtonen just couldn’t see most of the shots from Campbell and Spacek at the point.

I want to give special recognition to Drew Stafford, who doesn’t appear on the scoresheet.  He stepped in to Ilya Kovalchuk when the Thrasher thought Toni Lydman had hit a teammate knee on knee (it wasn’t, it was a hip check), and I always like seeing the guys standing up for each other.  Rookie Michael Ryan had two assists, but also blocked a shot…with his melon.  You know you are giving your all when the Equipment Manager has to fix a hole in your helmet.

Miller was playing with a heavy heart last night, as his cousin “Matt Man” Schoals died from complications due to a bone marrow transplant.  Ryan’s mask has a tribute to his cousin on the back, and he had enlisted Matt’s help with the design.  The Millers started The Steadfast Foundation to assist patients and families touched by cancer.
