Sit DOWN Hockeytown

The Buffalo Sabres are flexing their merchandising muscles, according to this report.

Now the Sabres are about to overtake the Red Wings in an off-the-ice category as the top seller of NHL-licensed merchandise. That lofty ranking has belonged to the so-called “Hockeytown” for the past 10 years.

The NHL reported this week online sales for Sabres-related products via the nhl.com store are up 900 percent from April 2005 through April 2006.

Even more amazing to me is the bit on individual jersey sales:

The NHL said in April that sales of jerseys for the Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby ranked first overall but Buffalo players Ryan Miller, Daniel Briere, Maxim Afinogenov, Chris Drury, Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville held the second through seventh spots. That is not common in the other major team sports of baseball, basketball or football where attention often focuses on just one or two players.

Let’s go BUFFALO!

Freakin’ SWEET

HSBC Arena will be open to watch all remaining Buffalo Sabres home games! This is way cool, and also shows that they listen to fans, who asked about having the arena open (since they’ll be downtown for the Party in the Plaza anyway. It will be business as usual on game nights, with the anthems, Sabretooth, and refreshments. Now that I can go in and sit down for the games, I am TOTALLY there. Domo Arigato, Tom Golisano!!
