SUNY-Buffalo at the Forefront of Post-Concussion Syndrome Research
It took more than 11 months, but Buffalo Sabres forward Tim Connolly returned to the lineup after suffering a serious concussion against the Ottawa Senators in last year’s NHL playoffs. Tim also missed the entire 2003-2004 season with a concussion. He credits a treatment developed at the University of Buffalo for getting him back on the ice.
For unknown reasons, 5 to 10 percent of people who experience a concussion have symptoms that persist beyond six weeks. These people are diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome. Previously, there has been no treatment for the condition with proven success.
“The new program is in the experimental stages, but I think it’s going to change the way (post-concussion syndrome) is handled,” Connolly said.
Willer and his co-researchers call their new treatment “controlled exercise.” Basically, they prescribe an individualized exercise program for the athletes. This allows them to begin working out in short intervals. The athletes at first train at a level that doesn’t cause symptoms. The level gradually increases until symptoms are gone.

Sabres win 4-2; High-pitched whining sound heard from Nassau Coliseum
Apr 19, 2007 NHL
The Buffalo Sabres took a 3-1 series lead last night with a 4-2 win over the New York Islanders. It is the second straight game the Isles have dropped at home, after splitting the games in Buffalo. Jason Blake of the Isles got on the board first, however the lead didn’t last as Thomas Vanek put back a rebound to tie it up a few minutes later. Not long after Dainius Zubrus dominated the Isles behind their own net as they were unable to push him off the puck before he passed it in front of the net to Drury, who doesn’t miss from there. Sillinger tied it up for the Islanders with 16 seconds to go in the first period. Shocked, by the way, at how Sillinger is dominating at the faceoff dot.
