Sabres vs. Rangers, Game 2

Game 2 is tonight at HSBC Arena. The biggest news is they will be having beer again at the party out in the plaza, after putting in some, ah, consumption controls. I’ll be leaving tonight, so I’ll have to catch the Sabres’ victory on the radio.

Woot-off

Woot started one of their ‘Woot-offs’ last night.  If you’ve ever felt the need for cheap gadgetry (and who hasn’t?), this is a great time to get some.  They’ve had a gaming mouse, a Belkin iPod dock, and an external DVD writer so far,  just for example.

Sabres beat Rangers 5-2

Buffalo ran over, around and through the New York Rangers in the 5-2 win at HSBC Arena.  Both goaltenders were stellar in the first period, but in the second Thomas Vanek opened the scoring with a great deflection of a Dmitri Kalinin shot.  The Sabres came right back down the ice with the ‘fourth line’ splitting the Rangers D for an Ales Kotalik wrister up over Henrik Lundqvist’s shoulder.  Two minutes later, Thomas Vanek broke to the front of the net again, this time showing patience as he calmly skated around a Ranger defender who dropped to block his shot and put it behind Lundqvist for the eventual game-winner.  Pominville scored on a goal that went to video review, and Drew Stafford out-worked Jaromir Jagr for an empty-netter to finish the scoring for the good guys.  Hossa and Shanny had the two Rangers goals.

In the Sean Avery watch, he was hit as much as dished it out, and was a stellar -3 on 18 minutes of ice time. ;)

Gizmodo shows you how to be Super

The Giz outfits you wannabe crimefighters with some tools of the trade. My personal fave is the Tesla coil attachment for your ‘Super’car. Which in this case appears to be a hatchback.

Sabres vs. Rangers, 7:00pm

*twitch*  My much-needed hockey fix comes tonight as the Sabres host the Rangers for the first game of their Round 2 playoff series.  The Rangers come in off a sweep of the unfortunate Thrashers, and are generating an astounding amount of hot air which might just be the death of them in this series.  The Sabres really seem to be a team that will respond to that sort of thing with a beat-down on the scoreboard.

The Rangers fired the opening salvos, with coach Tom Renney saying he’s not sure the top-seeded Sabres are “the cream of the crop” and pesty forward Sean Avery warning, “I’m going to hurt them.”

I think Ryan Miller has the best response:

“He better have respect for some guys in here because if they approach it that we’re not that good, it’s going to bite them in the butt,” goaltender Ryan Miller said. “But if he’s just trying to prepare his team, it’s psychological warfare, and I don’t think anybody in here is going to play that game. I don’t think we need to.

“We feel like we’re a team that’s built to win, and we’re built to play good hockey. We just have to go out there and execute. We can’t worry about what they say. We can only worry about what they do on the ice. We especially can’t worry about what their coach says. We’re never going to see him on the ice. There’s no way to get back at the coach, so to speak, besides winning hockey games.”

All of this is at least bringing a bit of drama to a series where the teams haven’t seen each other since December. Both clubs are much different thanks to deadline acquisitions (and the Sabres having their players healthy). It’s been forever since they met in the playoffs so no bad blood to spill over that, either.

When Buffalo and New York met in the 1978 playoffs, current Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff was an undrafted 18-year-old defenseman with the Lethbridge Broncos of the Western Hockey League. Only seven Sabres players were alive when that series was being played, while the Rangers had nine.

I hate making predictions, but I feel a 4-1, 4-2 type outcome is likely tonight (for the good guys, of course).

The forums

I know the forums are a bit wonky depending on which theme I have enabled, I’ll be working on it though.

Edit:  I’ve just stopped trying to integrate the forum into the Wordpress stuff directly…I don’t think it’ll really come up much anyhoo.

Bring on the Rangers!

The Sabres staked themselves to a three goal lead, but in the end the Islanders fought back and lost 4-3. Ryan Miller made a blind save in the final 30 seconds on Miro Satan to help the Sabres advance to the second round. They’ll be facing the New York Rangers, who lost all four games to Buffalo in the regular season, though they were all close.

Sabres/Isles Game 5 tonight

It’s gameday here in suprisingly sunny Buffalo, NY. HSBC Arena will be rocking tonight as the good guys can close out the series tonight with a win on home ice. I hope that there is a tight rein on the rough stuff tonight if the Isles get behind big, I don’t want any of our guys to get hurt.

Jack Thompson is a colossal tool

Jack Thompson blames Bill Gates for the shootings at Virginia Tech. The nutjob shows his ignorance as he attributes Counterstrike to His Gatesness, despite the fact the only MS involvement is the fact that they make the OS it runs on. He mentions Halo along with CS as ‘killing simulators’. It should be noted that no games were found in the search of Cho’s dormroom.

Here’s an article at Ars that gives you a little background, if this is your first time hearing about Thompson.

Mel Kiper thawed for NFL Draft coverage

Seriously, where does this guy go during the season?  Kiper Jr. is out of suspended animation and prognosticating on the upcoming NFL Draft.  Living in Buffalo, I’m hearing suprisingly little about it, thanks to the Sabres playoff run.  I know they are looking at Patrick Willis with the first pick, which would be great since TKO and Fletcher-Baker are both outta here.
